Traffic Signs, Signals, and Pavement Markings

Understanding Road Signs and Pictorial Messages
The shape and color of various traffic signs always provide drivers with an indication of what type of information is contained within the sign. Be aware of the following types of signs:

 1.       Eight-Sided (octagonal) Stop Sign – you must come to a complete stop when you see this sign. Always stop at the white stop line (or “limit line”) painted on the street before entering the intersection. If no stop line exists, stop at the corner, just before the intersection.

2.       Four-sided Yellow Diamond-Shaped Signs – these are warning signs that let you know of specific conditions or situations on the road. Warning signs can be used for a variety of purposes, such as preparing you for a sharp corner (as well as for the direction of the curve and speed limit within the curve) or letting you know that you are about to merge with other traffic. They may also warn you of lanes that are about to end, pedestrian crossings, or highways becoming divided. Always pay attention to these signs and obey their warnings. They exist for the safety of all motorists and pedestrians.

3.       Black and White Regulatory Signs – these signs indicate specific rules of the road, such as speed limits, no passing zones, no turning areas, no parking zones, one way streets, and more. Sometimes the lettering or pictures on these signs is red.

4.       Orange Diamond-Shaped Signs – these signs are generally used in construction zones and provide drivers with the necessary direction to safely negotiate the situation. They can include detour signs, flagman and construction ahead warnings, and temporary one-lane roads. These signs may also post a new speed limit for the construction zone. You should always slow down in these areas and be prepared to follow the directions of the road workers or additional signs.
